April Update.

The river fishing has been great!

This last month has offered up some really great fishing in the Eastern Sierra. Both the Upper & Lower Owens have been consistently fishing well. We have seen temps upwards of 85 degrees in the Bishop area and the snow is already disappearing quickly. These warm days have brought favorable spring conditions and ample bug activity, producing some really special fishing days. The first waves of caddis showed up a few weeks back and gave us a 10 day period of amazing dry fly fishing. If you were lucky enough to catch this then you know exactly how good it was.

Moving through April we will continue to spend our time on the Upper & Lower Owens while we wait for the general trout opener on April 30th. With the low snow pack this years river fishing will be early in the season. That being said if you have any interest in river trips the next few months is the time to hit it hard. I anticipate water temps will jump up quickly this year and the run off will be very short lived.

General trout season opener is only 20 days away and its time to start planning your trip to the Mammoth Lakes area. We guides are already prepping for days in the sun on Crowley Lake. The boat is getting shined up, the flies are falling off the tying vice and the rods are all getting new lines.

Last year I witnessed some of the highest surface water temps that I have personally seen on Crowley Lake and our surrounding streams. I feel this year we will definitely see our best fishing through the months of May, June & mid July. I hope that the month of August brings us some break in high temps and that the water stays clear of our ever anticipated algae blooms. September and October always provide some of the nicest days of fall fishing in our area as long as water levels remain sustainable for our fisheries.

Taking all this into account I wouldn't wait too long to get up here and take advantage of the early season fishing. I am already booking dates into July and I anticipate a busy year.

This year I will be in hosting trips in Alaska for most of August. I have some open dates available to any interested parties looking to check off a bucket-list trip. Check out my "Travel" section for more information. https://www.wildflyanglers.com/travel.

Lastly here are some good times we captured over the last few weeks. I look forward to our next day on the water.
