The fishing season in the Eastern Sierra has begun exceptionally well. With cool temperatures and active trout, spring is an ideal time to visit. There are numerous fishing opportunities available, ranging from the Lower Owens in Bishop to Bridgeport and various locations in between.
Over the past ten days, I have been guiding across different areas, experiencing successful outings wherever we have ventured.
The Lower Owens is currently flowing at 127 cfs, which is favorable for this time of year. Typically, we lose access to this fishery due to high flows by the end of April. We have had success using indicators, with some dry fly action sprinkled in.
Crowley Lake has been particularly noteworthy since opening day. General reports indicate a significant number of trout, and I have personally witnessed some remarkable days this past week. The excellent fishing conditions are expected to continue in the coming months, with May offering some of the best action of the season. This time of year is truly special, with stunning snow-capped peaks as a backdrop and optimal fishing conditions you don't want to miss out.
Bridgeport Reservoir has received strong reports. Although I cannot provide personal observations, it appears to be well worth a visit.
The East Walker is currently flowing at 130 cfs, having hovered around 100 cfs since the season opened. This increase should further enhance the current conditions. Although the mile suffered significant losses last summer, the fishing downstream of the bridge has been promising and merits a visit. Hopefully, the increased flows will encourage fish to return to the mile.
This period offers the most productive fishing with minimal crowds. I highly recommend planning a trip during the spring, as it promises to be rewarding.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any interest for you next fishing adventure. We look forward to showing you a great day on the water of your choice.
