Dear Anglers,

Spring has officially arrived in the Eastern Sierra, and with it comes the promise of fantastic fly fishing conditions! Currently the Upper & Lower Owens River are fishing great! As the temperatures warm and the days grow longer, eager trout are starting to rise, making this the perfect time to cast your lines. Flows on the Lower Owens are low ( 83 cfs ) and will continue to rise making trout even more active. Currently the water temps are down but with the warmer days this will bring the temperatures up promoting some fantastic dry fly opportunities. Early season on the Lower Owens is the best time of year to visit this fishery. We've been seeing success with various patterns, mostly under the indicator but soon they'll be looking up. Caddis larva, cased caddis, BWO nymphs and midges during the cooler part of the day.

With the arrival of spring hatches, the waters are coming alive, and our pristine rivers and lakes are teeming with abundant trout just waiting for your fly. As the temperatures begin to warm and the days grow longer, the aquatic ecosystems start to flourish, creating an ideal environment for trout to thrive. The emergence of various insects, such as mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies, signals the start of an exciting fishing season. Whether you’re a seasoned pro with years of experience under your belt or just starting out on your angling journey, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the thrill of preseason fishing at its finest. Currently, the Upper Owens River is producing some remarkable trout fishing opportunities, with good numbers of trout actively feeding and making themselves available to anglers. The clear, cold waters of the river provide the perfect habitat for these fish, and their vibrant colors and energetic behavior are a testament to the health of the ecosystem. As you cast your line, take a moment to appreciate the stunning surroundings—the lush greenery, the gentle sound of flowing water, and the fresh scent of spring in the air. However, as you embark on your fishing adventure, it is crucial to remember to be respectful of spawning trout. This time of year is vital for the fish as they engage in their reproductive cycle, and it is our responsibility as anglers to practice ethical fishing. Targeting fish in deeper pools and runs can help minimize disturbance to spawning areas. Look for spots where the water flows more slowly, as these locations often provide refuge for trout during this sensitive time. In addition, it is not only required but using barbless hooks and practicing catch-and-release techniques to ensure the sustainability of the trout population for future generations. By doing so, you not only enhance your fishing experience but also contribute to the conservation of these beautiful creatures and their habitat. So gather your gear, prepare your flies, and head out to enjoy the incredible fishing opportunities that spring has to offer. Whether you're casting from the bank or wading into the refreshing waters, each moment spent fishing is a chance to connect with nature and the thrill of the catch.
